Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney has said all workers deserve fair pay and decent working conditions.Speaking after attending the May Day Rally in Belfast the party’s Workers’ Rights spokesperson said:
“Thousands have marched in solidarity at May Day Rallies here in Ireland and across the world for the rights of all workers to fair pay and decent working conditions.
“We especially remembered the workers in Gaza, hundreds of whom have been killed during Israel’s latest assault.
“Workers play a vital role in our society and it is only right we commit ourselves to advancing their rights, improving the lives of all workers and their families.
“Sinn Féin stand with workers.
“We are bringing forward the most significant and progressive workers’ rights legislation in a generation.
“This legislation will help put more money in workers’ pockets, improve their working conditions, support families, and strengthen trade unions.
“It will tackle unequal workplace practices, by banning exploitative zero-hours contracts to give workers clarity on both their hours and wages each week and includes proposals for paid leave for parents whose newborns are admitted to neonatal care unit.
“On behalf of Sinn Féin, I extend solidarity greetings to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, and to all workers and their families, in Ireland and internationally, this May Day weekend.” ENDS/CRÍOCH
