Any new DCC byelaws must support and strengthen homeless street services – Cllr. Daithí Doolan
6 January 2025
Sinn Féin’s Dublin City Councillors have tonight said that any new byelaws on street services for homeless people must support and strengthen these services and the public.
Speaking after tonight’s Dublin City Council meeting, Sinn Féin Group Leader on Dublin City Council, Cllr. Daithí Doolan said:
“I am deeply disappointed that our Emergency Motion on this important issue was ruled out of order by the Lord Mayor at tonight’s City Council meeting.
“Dublin City Council needs to send out a very clear message. Any new byelaws must not become a barrier to these services.
“The homeless crisis is a direct result of consecutive governments’ failed and failing housing policies.
“Those providing soup kitchens and other on street services are volunteers doing their best to meet the needs of others.
“It is vital that there is comprehensive consultation with these services before any byelaws are proposed.
“I would encourage every service to use this opportunity to fully engage with the process.
“Any new byelaws introduced must support and strengthen these services while also ensuring that the byelaws protect and support those availing of these services.”
Emergency Motion:
That Dublin City Council is committed to working with others to ensure all homeless services in the city meet the highest standards. DCC recognises and acknowledges the essential work done by the volunteers of homeless services in Dublin. DCC will ensure that any future byelaws support and strengthen these services while also ensuring that the bylaws protect and support the public who avail of these services.
