Bombing of humanitarian aid ship to Gaza an appalling breach of international law – Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD, has condemned yesterday’s appalling attack on a humanitarian aid ship to Gaza and described the attack as an appalling breach of international law.
Teachta Ó Laoghaire said:
“It is extremely worrying to see today that a ship carrying humanitarian aid and activists to Gaza has been bombed by drones and disabled while in international waters off Malta as it headed toward Gaza.
“The situation in Gaza is utterly horrifying and aid to the region is so desperately needed. This aid is life-saving. To see a humanitarian aid ship targeted and attacked like this is nothing short of disgraceful.
“It has been reported that the ‘Freedom Flotilla Coalition’ ship came under attack in international waters from armed drones to the front of an unarmed civilian vessel twice, causing a fire and a substantial breach in the hull of the ship.
“I am glad to hear that the crew members and civilians have been confirmed safe and that no casualties were reported.
“It is now crucially important that this attack is investigated by the relevant authorities and that the Irish Government plays its part in that.
“This happened at a time when aid is desperately needed. Due to the Israeli blockade, Gaza is facing a catastrophic humanitarian crisis due to the lack of food. On 2 March, Israel shut all crossings to Gaza – preventing all goods, including food, fuel and medicines from entering.
“Israel is actively depriving people of food. This disgraceful treatment of people is having a devastating impact. They desperately need aid – they need food.
“To achieve and build a lasting peace, there must be sanctions for these crimes – at European level and here in Ireland.
“The Irish Government must play its part by passing the Occupied Territories Bill without any further delay and adopting other sanctions.
“Sinn Féin, along with other opposition parties, will continue to exert maximum pressure on government and do everything within our power to ensure that they do so.”
