British government must do the right thing and establish public inquiry into Sean Brown murder – Mallaghan

3 April 2025

Sinn Féin MP Cathal Mallaghan has said the British government must now establish an independent public inquiry into the murder of Sean Brown without delay.

The Mid Ulster MP was speaking following a hearing today in Belfast where the Lady Chief Justice made clear the only viable route to reveal the truth into Sean Brown’s murder is through a public inquiry.

Cathal Mallaghan was in court to support the Brown family and hear the comments.

“There should be no more delays or appeals by the British government. Bridie Brown and her family deserve a public inquiry into the murder of her late husband.

“The Lady Chief Justice was clear in her remarks, and this view is shared widely by families—the ICRIR is not fit for purpose and cannot deliver an Article 2 compliant investigation into Sean Brown’s killing.

“The British Secretary of State must now do the right thing and move to establish a public inquiry. Anything less would be an insult to the Brown family and an affront to the principles of truth and justice.

“The Brown family has gone through so much and yet, almost 28 years later, they are still fighting courageously.

“It’s time for this British government to fulfill its commitment to ’repeal and replace’ the Legacy Act. It must return to the legacy mechanisms agreed at the Stormont House Agreement and apply them in a human rights compliant matter. And finally treat families with the dignity and respect they are entitled to.”
