Climate Action Plan 2025 set to repeat more of the same failed strategies – Pa Daly TD

14 April 2025

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Pa Daly TD, has strongly critisced the government for continuing with more of the same failed strategies in addressing the climate emergency.  Teachta Daly called for a radical reset to ensure a just transition.

The Kerry TD was responding to reports over the weekend that the much-delayed Climate Action Plan 2025 is expected to be brought before Cabinet on Wednesday.

Teachta Daly said:

“Reports suggest that the much-delayed Climate Action Plan 2025 is going to be a re-hash of already existing measures.

“Despite the fact that Ireland is now almost certain to miss our 2030 targets, government seem determined to continue with more of the same – putting us on a path toward climate failure.

“The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Climate Change Advisory Council (CCAC) have predicted that at best, this approach can only get us to 70% of the necessary progress.  However, given the current trend, it looks highly unlikely we will even get that far.

“Consider the fact that the only offshore project on the West of Ireland will now not go ahead.  With no back up plan in the works, it appears that any hope of an energy independent Ireland is fading fast.

“Instead of supply-side investment, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Regional Independents are stubbornly clinging on to their regressive approach, whereby ordinary workers and families are locked out of the transition and then punished for it.

“In a regime of eco-austerity, the only people who win are the wealthy who can afford to transition and the large corporations who profit off it.

“That is not a just transition.

“The world is on the brink of an ecological catastrophe.  We have no choice but to take ambitious action to prevent it.

“However, perhaps instead of treating it as only a burden – we must also treat it as a momentous opportunity.

“It is high time the government was honest with people.  The Climate Action Plan 2025 was yet another missed opportunity.  Climate action can be progressive and fair – that’s what is meant by a Just Transition.

“This is the type of transition Sinn Féin is committed to – one that is accessible, affordable and sustainable.  People deserve nothing less.”
