25 April 2025
Speaking following his appointment as Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration Matt Carthy TD said that he is eager to ensure the speedy establishment of the committee and to get to work to make sure that the government is held to account and that there is better delivery of justice, policing and migration services.
Teachta Carthy said:
“I am honoured to have been appointed as the Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration. This Committee has a lot of urgent and important work to do and I look forward to getting that work started.
“While the committee will have a lot of legislative work to conduct, it also has an important role to play in holding the government and the Minister for Justice to account. I will work with all members of the committee to ensure that this happens.
“I believe that this committee can play a constructive and proactive role in addressing a range of issues including ensuring we have safer communities, better policing, more gardaí and a migration system that is fit for purpose and actually works as it is supposed to.
“As Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration I look forward to working with all those involved in our justice and migration systems, including with the Garda Siochána representative associations and the new policing oversight structures.
“As Committee chair there are a number of policies that I would like to see on the agenda as early as possible. These include an examination of the new garda divisional model of which there is increasing criticism, the recruitment and retention crisis in An Garda Siochána the profiteering in the granting of IPAS contracts and the wider dysfunctions within the migration system.
“I feel strongly that a strong and active committee will be able to contribute significantly to finding solutions that work for our communities, the Gardaí and all affected stakeholders. I hope government will allow for the speedy establishment of the committees so that we can begin this important work.”
