Communities Minister must bring forward Irish Language Strategy – Brogan

19 March 2025

Sinn Féin MLA Nicola Brogan has said the time is now for the Communities Minister Gordon Lyons to bring forward the Irish Language Strategy.

She was speaking after her party brought a motion to the floor of the Assembly on Tuesday calling for this to be delivered.

The Communities Minister has a legal duty to develop and bring forward an Irish Language Strategy.

“In communities across the island, Gaeilge is thriving, with record numbers of children entering Irish Medium Education, and an energetic, grassroots revival of the language continues,” said the party’s spokesperson for culture.

“Despite this, the Irish Language Strategy, which Gordon Lyons is legally obliged to bring forward, continues to be delayed by the minister.

“He also refuses to meet with Conradh na Gaeilge, despite repeated requests by the group for a meeting.”

Ms Brogan also commented on the positives of the language and called for all parties to unite behind it.

“The Irish language belongs to us all, and is to be championed, celebrated and embraced by people right across the island.

“It’s time for the Communities Minister to bring forward the Irish Language Strategy without delay, and for all parties to work together to ensure its full implementation.”
