Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD welcomes progress towards ceasefire in Ukraine

12 March 2025

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD, has welcomed progress towards a ceasefire following talks between the United States and Ukraine, and said that it is now incumbent on Russia to begin negotiations.

He added that, throughout any negotiations, the US and EU must advance the need for any settlement to be sustainable and fair, and to be acceptable to Ukraine.

Teachta Ó Laoghaire said:

“It is encouraging and welcome to see progress towards a ceasefire from talks between the United States and Ukraine at Jeddah last night.

“The Ukrainian people have suffered immensely in the last three years after the invasion and war of aggression by Vladimir Putin.

“I hope this proposal can form the basis of negotiations towards a just, lasting & sustainable peace in Ukraine.

“It is now incumbent on the Russian Government to respond positively to this development and begin negotiations.

“It is important that throughout any negotiations that the US and EU advance the need for any settlement to be sustainable and fair, and to be acceptable to Ukraine, who must themselves be central to any negotiations.”
