6 March 2025

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan has welcomed an announcement from Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins to extend Temporary Exemption Certificates.

It means the successful initiative from the previous Minister John O’Dowd to help reduce MOT waiting times will continue for a further year.Data from the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) shows that this scheme has helped reduce the time for an MOT to 30 days.

“This plan has helped thousands of motorists to stay on the road legally, and it’s positive news it is set to continue.

“Sinn Féin ministers in the department have demonstrated their willingness to tackle this issue and improve waiting times for a test.”

With a DfI consultation on changing the frequency of MOTs for some vehicles set to close next month, the party’s transport spokesperson also highlighted the additional positive steps being taken. These have included recruiting additional workers, operating on Sundays and bank holidays alongside other measures.

“I also welcome the steps being taken by the minister to reduce the wait for a test further.

“I’ll continue to work with the department and the other parties to cut waiting times and ensure our roads are safe for all.”
