Extra train carriages to benefit Dublin Mid-West Commuters – Mark Ward TD

7 April 2025

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Dublin, Mark Ward TD, has welcomed the announcement of 185 new train carriages by Iarnród Éireann.

These carriages will be of benefit to commuters from Fonthill, Kishogue and Adamstown stations toward Heuston, in the new DART+ Programme.

Teachta Ward said:

“It is really welcome news that additional carriages for train services throughout the Greater Dublin Area have been ordered.

“I received a response from Iarnród Éireann to confirm that 185 new carriages have been ordered.

“The first set of these new carriages will be for the Drogheda line. This will free up commuter trains currently on the Drogheda line will be transferred to other lines including the Heuston line.

“This is expected to start from 2026. This will mean better capacity on these lines for people who commute from Fonthill, Kishogue and Adamstown stations.

“I have been raising the issue of overcrowded or infrequent train services for a number of years.

“Constituents have told me that they have not been able to get on the train because it was at overcrowded by the time it arrived at their station. This impacts people getting to and from work.

“The new train carriages will be welcome news for these commuters, but it needs to be delivered in a timely manner.

“90 of the new carriages have not been assigned their routes just yet, and I will be advocating for stations in my constituency given the increase in our population.

“I will write to the Minister to outline the need for this.”
