Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil’s cabinet highlights they don’t care about gender equality – Kathleen Funchion MEP
24 January 2025
Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland South, Kathleen Funchion, has criticised the new government for their staggering lack of gender equality in the new cabinet, arguing they have already failed their first test in addressing gender inequality.
MEP Funchion said:
“Just three women have been appointed to ministerial positions in the next government – a figure that is wholly unacceptable.
“It is utterly scandalous that Taoiseach Micheál Martin could only identify one woman among his eight nominees for ministerial roles as part of this grubby deal with Fine Gael and the so-called independents. Simon Harris is no better, nominating just two women out of seven positions.
“How can women across Ireland take seriously any commitment this government claims to have for gender equality when their own Cabinet appointments are so woefully unbalanced?
“A government that cannot prioritise equal representation at the highest levels sends a clear message that women’s voices are an afterthought.
“The need for women in politics is not just about optics – it is essential for creating fairer policies that represent the diversity of our society. Women bring unique perspectives, experiences, and insights that are vital for shaping inclusive governance.
“Political parties must prioritise selecting women as candidates in winnable seats, breaking down barriers and ensuring that talented, capable women are empowered to rise through the political ranks. Real change is needed to guarantee meaningful representation.
“Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael’s failure to elevate more women to leadership positions is a stark reminder that these parties have not evolved with the times. In 2025, this is simply unacceptable.
“Sinn Féin will continue to stand up for real equality in Dublin, Belfast and in Brussels.”
