‘GAA is flourishing and we must do everything we can to continue supporting it’ – Brogan

11 February 2025

Sinn Féin MLA Nicola Brogan has today spoken of the huge benefits of GAA and the enormous impact the sport has in communities throughout Ireland.

She was speaking after a senior delegation from the GAA including its President Jarlath Burns presented a new study to the Assembly’s All-Party Group on Sport and Recreation.

Findings of the report include an estimated €2.87 billion contribution to communities and society on the island.

The party’s spokesperson for sport said:

“This report, the first of its kind in Irish sport, details the huge economic and social impact of Gaelic games across the island.

“GAA is flourishing in Ireland and is having a transformative effect on young people and communities, as well as our local economy.

“Sport as a whole has the power to be a real unifier of our people, and it’s important we continue to do everything we can to support the growth of Gaelic games and other sporting codes.

“The report is also a reminder of the need to get on with building Casement Park, which will bring monumental opportunities for Ulster gaels. I would urge the British Government to deliver the funding necessary and let us move forward with the reconstruction of this new and exciting stadium.”
