Gaza cannot be erased: US government must restate its commitment to two-state solution – Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD
5 February 2025
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD, has expressed grave reservations and concerns regarding comments by US President Trump effectively suggesting the dismantling of Gaza.
Deputy Ó Laoghaire added that these latest comments are completely contrary to international law and conflict resolution.
Teachta Ó Laoghaire said:
“What we have heard this morning is extremely worrying for the Palestinian people. The comments made by President Trump are completely contrary to international law and contrary to the rights of the Palestinian people.
“The Palestinian people have a right to live in Gaza. The Irish Government must demand clarity from the US Government on its position here.
“The only way forward for peace in the region is on the basis of a two-state solution, which includes Gaza as part of the Palestinian state.
“The US Government should restate its commitment to the two-state solution, which must include Gaza.
“Gaza cannot be erased and we cannot see the displacement of the Palestinian people. This type of rhetoric can never be normalised. The Palestinian people have endured a horrific one and a half years of bombing and death.
“While the speech by President Trump spoke about Gaza being reduced to rubble, the reality is that this is because of the bombing and aggression of the Israeli government, supported by its allies.
“The two-state solution is the only basis for a lasting solution in the region. This has indeed been the position of successive US Governments and the subject of numerous UN security council resolutions.
“The people of Palestine cannot be treated as pieces on a board to be moved around without any regard for their rights.
“Tonight in the Dáil, we will debate the Occupied Territories Bill. Sinn Féin is calling on the Irish Government to use this opportunity to make a firm stance against illegal Israeli occupation and against the proposed erasure of Gaza.”
