Government delay of promised increase in sick leave entitlement an attack on workers – Johnny Guirke TD
8 April 2025
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Workers’ Rights, Johnny Guirke TD, has condemned the government’s failure to honour its commitment to increase Statutory Occupational Sick Pay entitlement from five days to seven.
The Meath West TD said that this delay not only undermines the rights of workers but also places Ireland at a disadvantage compared to other EU member states, which offer far superior sick pay benefits.
Teachta Guirke said:
“The government’s recent decision to pause this important increase is unacceptable and an attack on workers’ rights. The Occupational Sick Pay Act 2022 was designed to enhance protections for workers, yet for the second time, the government has failed to implement provisions contained within its own legislation.
“SIPTU has rightly criticised this move, highlighting that the ongoing cost of living crisis and economic volatility make the need for robust worker protections more urgent than ever.
“The evidence shows that the introduction of the current sick pay scheme has had minimal impact on employers, with 65% reporting little to no effect on their operational costs or employee attendance. This demonstrates that providing adequate sick leave is not only a matter of fairness but also a sound economic decision.
“By delaying the increase, the government is sending a clear message that it prioritizes employer convenience over the well-being of workers. Workers deserve certainty and security in their rights. We will continue to advocate for policies that strengthen those rights.
“This is yet another broken election promise. The government must review this decision and fulfill its election commitment.”
