Government funding cuts to the Tenant In Situ scheme will result in more people becoming homeless – Cllr. Daithí Doolan
1 April 2025
Sinn Féin leader on Dublin City Council Daithí Doolan has said that cruel government cuts of €22 million to Dublin City Council funding for Tenant In Situ scheme will result in more people becoming homeless.
He added that this scheme is a vital homelessness prevention support and must be reinstated in full.
Cllr. Doolan said:
“Dublin City Council will receive less funding this year for Tenant In Situ scheme than it did in 2024.
“Minister for Housing James Browne has cut funding to Dublin City Council for the Tenant In Situ scheme by €22m. This is cruel, mean and heartless. It will have an immediate and negative effect on those facing eviction this year.
“Dublin City Council will now receive €95m for this year. This massive cut means that the council will run out of money before the end of the year. This is totally unacceptable.
“The cut comes less than a week after it was confirmed that homeless figures in Dublin continue to spiral out of control. There are now 10,948 people homeless in Dublin, including 3,434 children.
“The Tenant In Situ scheme was an essential tool in preventing homelessness. It allowed local authorities to buy properties from landlords who otherwise would have carried out no fault evictions. Last year hundreds of families were prevented from becoming homeless because of this effective scheme.
“I would urge the Minister, even at this late stage, to reverse his decision and reinstate the scheme in full.”
