Government increase carbon tax leading to price hikes in home heating oil – Pa Daly TD

2 May 2025

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Energy, Pa Daly TD, has slammed Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Regional Independents for increasing the carbon tax, heaping more pressure on already hard-pressed workers and families during a raging cost of living crisis.

Commenting on the government’s decision to go ahead with the increase this week, the Kerry TD said:

“This week the government increased the carbon tax – the same government that is backed by Kerry’s four other TDs.

“The carbon tax means the price of coal and home heating oil has gone up, with petrol and diesel to come later in the year. We know punishing ordinary people when they have no other choice does not work. It certainly does not lead to a just transition.

“The carbon tax hits ordinary people hardest. During the cost of living crisis, workers and families are already really struggling to make ends meet.

“Grocery bills are sky-rocketing, insurance costs are through the roof, rents are increasing by double digits as more and more people can’t afford to keep a roof over their heads.

“I am disappointed but not surprised that the same representatives who promised to fight against the carbon tax for years have let yet another increase sail through this week without any resistance.

“I would hope that those TDs who have pointed out the deep unfairness with the carbon when in opposition would have the courage of their convictions and join Sinn Féin’s call on government to scrap these increases, not just this year, but every year for the next five years.”
