Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland South, Kathleen Funchion, will tomorrow host a meeting in the European Parliament between David French, campaigner for Valerie’s Law, and EU Commissioner for Justice, Michael McGrath.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Teachta Funchion said:
“It will be an honour to welcome David French to the European Parliament. David is the brother of Valerie French, who was tragically murdered by her husband in 2019. Together, we will meet with Commissioner McGrath to advocate for the implementation of Valerie’s Law.
“In Ireland and other EU member states, a shocking legal loophole exists that allows a person who intentionally kills their partner to retain guardianship rights over their shared children.
“It’s unimaginable that bereaved families, already facing profound trauma, are forced to confront this injustice in court. The law as it stands only deepens their pain.
“I want to commend David French, from Cork, for his tireless and courageous campaign to close this loophole and protect children from further harm.
“While it is positive that the Justice Minister has secured Cabinet approval to begin drafting legislation to address this, the issue extends beyond this state. It is vital that we push for change across the entire EU.
“Tomorrow’s meeting with Commissioner McGrath is an important step toward ensuring that Valerie’s Law is adopted across all member states, so that no family has to endure this injustice again.”
