Kearney pays tribute to frontline workers in Gaza on International Workers’ Memorial Day
28 April 2025
Sinn Féin National Chairperson Declan Kearney MLA today paid tribute to workers in Gaza who have lost their lives or been injured because of Israel’s genocidal onslaught.
He was speaking after hosting the inaugural Sinn Féin Workers’ Memorial Day event at Stormont which honours those who have died or been injured at work.
Sinn Féin’s Leas-Uachtarán, Michelle O’Neill laid a wreath during the event while Deirdre Hargey MLA and Paul Maskey MP recited poems.
Today, 28 April, is International Workers’ Memorial Day.
“This is a day not just to reflect and remember, but to also commit to improving the lives and employment settings of all workers,” said the South Antrim MLA.
“This year, we particularly pay tribute to those civil defence, health and humanitarian workers in Gaza, among others, who have had their lives stolen from them due to Israel’s barbarity and inhumanity.
“Hundreds of public service workers in Gaza have been killed since Israel resumed its latest assault on the people of Palestine.
“At Stormont today, Sinn Féin honoured these workers and reiterated calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and an end to the relentless attacks on workers.”
Mr Kearney also highlighted the ‘significant’ Good Jobs Bill introduced in the Assembly by Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald.
“It is fitting that Minister Archibald today announced the most significant workers’ rights legislation in a generation.
“These proposals will eradicate the scourge of unequal workplace practices, support workers and families, and empower trade unions.”
