Legislation a real opportunity to cut the costs of school uniforms – Mason

Sinn Féin MLA Cathy Mason has welcomed an announcement from the Education Minister that legislation to make school uniforms affordable is on its way.
The South Down MLA said:
“Sinn Féin has been calling for legislation to make school uniforms affordable for several years now so the announcement from the Minister this week is welcome.
“This is a real opportunity to finally cut the costs of school uniforms and ease the pressure on families. 
“Sinn Féin will insist throughout this process that costs need to be cut considerably if these plans are to make any real difference to families.
“We will make the case that new laws must drive down costs by ensuring schools have competitive tendering processes, remove requirements for expensive branded items, and permit the use of affordable high street alternatives.
“Families need to see action on this issue urgently and Sinn Féin will work with all parties to get this through the Assembly as quickly as possible.”
