Matt Carthy TD calls for investigation into Garda handling of Mothers Against Genocide protest

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice, Matt Carthy TD, has called for an investigation into the handling by Gardaí of a protest at the Dáil by Mothers Against Genocide on Monday.

Teachta Carthy said:

“The approach to the peaceful protest by Mother’s Against Genocide to mark Mother’s Day was unnecessarily heavy handed.

“While the security at the Dáil is important, the response of An Garda Síochana to a peaceful protest should be proportionate.

“Mothers Against Genocide have made serious complaints about their treatment in custody. These complaints need to be fully investigated.

“If there is to be public confidence in An Garda Síochána, there must be full accountability for any failures in policing this kind of protest.”
