People with terminal illnesses deserve early access to their state pension – Dillon
1 April 2025
Sinn Féin MLA Linda Dillon has welcomed cross-party support for a motion brought to the Assembly on Monday by her party for early access to state pension for terminally ill people.
The motion called on the British government to allow those diagnosed with a terminal illness to access their state pension early, providing them with financial security and dignity in their final months.
“Those diagnosed with a terminal illness should not be forced to endure the added burden of financial hardship as they approach the end of their lives,” the Mid Ulster MLA said.
“People who have worked all their lives and paid taxes are being told that, despite facing a terminal diagnosis, they must wait until pension age to access the very support they’ve contributed to. That is indefensible. And that is why we have brought this motion forward.”
Former Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey previously extended terminal illness provisions for social security benefits here in the north.
Speaking during the debate, Ms Dillon called on parties to ‘build on the foundations laid by Minister Hargey’.
“The British government must make the necessary legislative and administrative changes that will allow early access to the state pension for those with a terminal diagnosis.
“This is about doing what is right. About ensuring that people do not spend their final months in stress, fear, and poverty — but in peace, dignity, and security. Let us be bold. Let us be compassionate.”
