Reinstating rates exemption for ATMs in rural areas will have ‘positive impact’ – Murphy

10 March 2025

Sinn Féin MLA Áine Murphy has said reinstating a rates exemption for ATMs in rural areas will have a positive impact.

The Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA said:

“As an MLA for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, I understand the vital role ATMs play in rural towns and villages, where cash remains a primary method of payment.

“Many residents still rely on ATMs, as they are often the only means of accessing cash.“Unfortunately, rural areas are losing ATM access, with major bank branches closing their rural branches, effectively abandoning communities, and leaving them without any face-to-face banking services.

“My hometown of Lisnaskea, for instance, lost its last bank branch last year, disrupting businesses and residents who no longer have access to a 24-hour ATM or full banking services.

“Although banking hubs have helped some communities, Lisnaskea has yet to secure one. However, with recent changes from LINK, I’ve applied again for reassessment, hopeful for a banking hub and 24-hour ATM access.

“The cost-of-living crisis and rise of online retailers make it even harder for rural businesses to thrive and ATMs are crucial for economic activity on rural main streets and rural regeneration.

“Today’s rural ATM order is an important step in protecting our remaining rural ATMs, and I hope it encourages more rural businesses to offer ATM services in the future.”
