Senator Chris Andrews stands in solidarity with Mothers Against Genocide activists

31 March 2025

Sinn Féin Senator Chris Andrews today stood in solidarity with Mothers Against Genocide activists who were removed by Gardaí while peacefully protesting outside Leinster House this morning having held an overnight Mother’s Day vigil for the women and children of Gaza.

He added that he would be raising the response by An Garda Síochána with Tánaiste Simon Harris in the Seanad later this week.

Senator Andrews said:

“Instead of the government meaningfully supporting Palestine by passing the Occupied Territories Bill and imposing sanctions on Israel, we today witnessed the cracking-down on a peaceful protest held by Mothers against Genocide.

“Today, I stood in solidarity with Mothers Against Genocide, who were removed by Gardaí outside Leinster House this morning after holding a poignant overnight vigil for the women and children of Gaza on Mother’s Day.

“Israel has trampled all over international law. Every day, people in Gaza and the West Bank are being subjected to unspeakable horrors, with families massacred and homes reduced to rubble by constant air strikes, while tens of thousands more are deprived of food and other basic necessities.

“There is practically no crime that Israel has not inflicted on the Palestinian people, and yet the international community, including the Irish government, refuses to hold them to account.

“Ordinary Irish people have, in their tens of thousands, taken to the streets right across the country to voice their abhorrence at Israel’s war crimes, and their anger at the inaction of the Irish government.

“I stand with those people, including activist groups like Mothers Against Genocide.

“This week in the Seanad, I will be raising this morning’s response of An Garda Síochána with Tánaiste Simon Harris, and I will once again be urging him, as Minister for Foreign Affairs, to finally take actions that hold Israel to account for their crimes.

“As Israel’s genocidal onslaught continues unabated, the Irish government should be listening to groups like Mothers Against Genocide.

“The government must play its part by imposing meaningful sanctions and by fulfilling its pre-election promise to pass the Occupied Territories Bill without delay.”
