Sheerin encourages people to have their say on credit union consultation

17 April 2025

Sinn Féin MLA and Economy Committee member Emma Sheerin has encouraged people to have their say on a consultation launched by the Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald to strengthen credit unions.

Open until Thursday 10 July 2025, the minister is seeking views on proposed reforms to ensure these organisations can continue to operate and serve communities.

The Mid Ulster MLA said:

“Credit unions are a central part of our communities, supporting local people with trusted financial advice and assistance.

“I welcome Minister Archibald’s intention to progress legislation and ensure credit unions can continue to flourish for years to come.

“This includes consideration for credit unions to be given more powers to invest in social projects such as social housing or green initiatives such as low cost loans for heat pumps.

“This also continues with the department’s commitment to build a fairer economy for all, with equal opportunities spread across regions.

“I would encourage the public to have its say on this consultation and to play a part in shaping the future of credit unions.”
