Sinn Féin has record number of key Oireachtas committee chairs

10 April 2025

Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald has said the party will use its record number of Oireachtas committee chairs to work night and day to stand up for workers and families, to hold the government to account, and ensure taxpayers’ money is spent properly.

She called on the government to end its “go-slow  approach” and that  “committees need to get to work.”

Ms. McDonald said:

“This is the largest number of committees that  Sinn Féin has ever chaired in the Dáil and among them are key committees that will set the political direction for the coming years.  We will work night and day to stand up for workers and families, to hold the government to account and ensure taxpayers’ money is spent properly.

“It is intolerable that the government is moving so slowly in establishing committees. There is no reason for this to be dragged out to the end of May. Our Chief Whip, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, put forward a proposal that the process be truncated to one week so that committees can be meeting in the first week of May.  We offered to work during recess to make this happen.”

Sinn Féin will chair the following Oireachtas committees

  • Finance
  • Justice, Home Affairs and Migration
  • Public Accounts
  • Defence and National Security
  • Disability Matters
  • Petitions
  • Fisheries and Maritime Affairs
