Sinn Féin tables DCC Emergency Motion demanding Minister reverse cuts to homeless prevention initiative
6 April 2025
Sinn Féin has tabled an Emergency Motion for tomorrow’s monthly Dublin City Council meeting demanding Minister James Browne reverse cuts to the essential homeless prevention initiative, the Tenant In Situ Scheme.
Cllr. Daithí Doolan, Sinn Féin Group Leader on Dublin City Council, said:
“The Tenant In Situ Scheme has been a successful tool in preventing homelessness in Dublin and beyond. Last year alone, it has ensured that several hundred families in Dublin have avoided slipping into to homelessness. The current homeless crisis would be even worse only for this scheme.
“It is deeply disappointing that the Minister for Housing James Browne has decided to gut the scheme. He has imposed massive cuts that will put hundreds of tenants at risk of homelessness.
“We cannot and will not accept these cuts lying down. Sinn Féin has tabled an emergency motion for tomorrow’s Dublin City Council meeting demanding that the minister immediately reverses his decision and reinstates the scheme in full.
“To cut funding for this successful scheme is nothing short of mean and heartless. It will cause huge stress and anxiety to some of the most at risk families in this city. We must fight back and we must win.
“I would urge all councillors, regardless of party, to support this motion. This will send out a very clear and loud message to Minister Browne. Reverse your decision and reinstate the Tenant In Situ Scheme in full.”
Text of Emergency Motion
Dublin City Council notes that the Tenant In Situ Scheme was an essential tool in preventing homelessness.
It allowed local authorities to buy properties from landlords who otherwise would have carried out no-fault evictions.
Last year, hundreds of families in Dublin were prevented from becoming homeless because of this effective scheme.
Dublin City Council is deeply concerned that the Minister for Housing James Bowne has cut funding to this scheme and introduced criteria that will result in more people becoming homeless.
Dublin City Council urges the Minister for Housing to immediately reverse his decision and to reinstate the scheme in full.
