We must build more homes to tackle homelessness – Gildernew

25 March 2025

Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew has said we must build more social and affordable homes to tackle homelessness and the over reliance on temporary accommodation.

The party’s housing spokesperson was speaking after a new report released today by the Audit Office said the over reliance on temporary accommodation is causing “potentially unsustainable financial pressure” for homelessness services.

“This report highlights the urgent need to build more social and affordable homes to tackle homelessness and support those currently relying on temporary accommodation,” said Mr Gildernew.

“The lack of homes being built is increasing the demand for temporary housing and putting a huge amount of pressure on the Housing Executive’s homelessness budget.

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA also highlighted that Sinn Féin is bringing legislation to the Assembly which would extend the period during which the Housing Executive is required to support and prevent someone at risk of becoming homeless.

“We are bringing legislation to the floor of the Assembly which would further support those at risk of becoming homelessness to find a home.

“Nearly 15 years of British government cuts have thwarted our efforts to cut housing waiting lists and build more homes, yet we will not give up fighting for fair investment in our public services.”
